Komulanköngäs waterfall

Komulanköngäs, originally named Lauttaköngäs, is located on the Syväjoki river, which flows from Lake Lauttajärvi, a few kilometres from the Ukkohalla tourist centre.

Vorlokki canyons

The Vorlokkki canyons are deep rock fissures where snow and ice can still remain at the bottom even during the heat of midsummer. It is located along the UKK hiking route, on the section between Hyrynsalmi and Komulanköngäs.

Devil’s Church

Devil’s Church is located in Hakokylä at the eastern end of Lake Ylä-Tervajärvi.

Kaunislehto Museum

The Kaunislehto Museum represents a typical Hyrynsalmi homestead from the turn of the 20th century. Some of the buildings have been relocated from different parts of the municipality and reconstructed on the sites of the original buildings, so the layout of the farmyard remains authentic.

Luvankoski Nature Trail

Luvankoski Nature Trail is a wonderful destination for a family day out in nature. Here you can enjoy the beauty of the Luvankoski Rapids, listen to the sound of flowing water, and discover a traditional countryside setting from the Hyrynsalmi area.

The trail is a circular route located only a 15-minute drive from the centre of Hyrynsalmi. It is easy to follow and suitable for visitors of all ages.

The route takes you through beautiful natural surroundings beside the rapids. Along the way, you can enjoy the peaceful forest, admire the scenic river, and visit the historic Niskala homestead. Information boards tell the story of the local nature, the rapids, and the people who once lived by the water.

Whether you are looking for a relaxing walk, a family adventure, or a chance to experience the beauty of Finnish nature, Luvankoski Nature Trail is a perfect place to visit.

Vuorilampi

Vuorilampi is located in the central parts of Hyrynsalmi. Vuorilampi is a beautiful wilderness pond surrounded by steep rock walls. A marked, easy-to-follow trail of just over two kilometres leads to Vuorilampi from the Kuhmo road (about 10 km east of the village centre). Metsähallitus has also built a nature trail around the pond, and a shelter with a campfire site and tables on the shore.

Hyrynsalmi Wooden Church

The Wooden Church of Hyrynsalmi was built in 1786. The church was designed and constructed by Jaakko Rijf. It is a typical Ostrobothnian cruciform church, characteristic of its time. The altarpiece was painted in the 1830s by Gustaf Hedman from Oulu. In 1840, a bell tower was completed under the direction of Jaakko Kuorikoski, housing two bells: a smaller one dating from 1787 and a larger one from 1873.

Mustarinda Nature Trail and Paljakka Fell Observation Tower

The approximately 3 km long nature trail runs through the old-growth forest at the summit of Paljakka Fell and offers a rare opportunity to explore a largely natural forest ecosystem. The trail begins at a public campfire hut located in the yard of Mustarinda. There are three route options, of which the red-marked route (700 m) leads to the Paljakka Fell observation tower, from which, in favourable weather conditions, it is possible to see 12 of the highest fells in Kainuu at the same time. In winter, the tower can be reached with snowshoes.

Tuomijoki Suspension Bridge

In a scene from the film Rukajärven tie (The Road to Rukajärvi), the wooden Tuomijoki bridge that was blown up was rebuilt in 2010 as a suspension bridge. The site is accessible by car (Heinijärventie 12, Hyrynsalmi).

Löytöjoki Tar and Turpentine Factory

The Löytöjoki Tar and Turpentine Factory, also known as the Hallan Ukko Tar Kiln, is located beside the Halla farm along the Löytöjoki River, about 16 kilometres from the village centre of Hyrynsalmi. The factory was built in 1924 by Johan Alfred Heikkinen, known as Hallan Ukko. Heikkinen was a member of parliament and a versatile developer of local industries. Guided tours to the site are organized by the old railway station of Hyrynsalmi.

Jääkäripirtti (“Jaeger Lodge”)

Hallan Ukko J. A. Heikkinen built a hidden cabin in Hyrynsalmi for the Jaegers on an island in Lake Saarijärvi, which later came to be known as Jääkärisaari (“Jaeger Island”).

Construction of the cabin began in early spring 1914, and it was completed in time for use by the Jaeger Movement. The Jääkäripirtti is one of the most valuable cultural and historical sites in the area. Visits are only possible with a guided tour.

Hallan Ukko memorial

The Hallan Ukko Memorial is located in an open field at the former site of the Halla farmhouse (Hallantie 126, Hyrynsalmi). The Halla farmhouse was relocated from this site to Seurasaari in Helsinki. Visitors may also visit the Hallan Ukko Memorial without a guide; please remember to close the gate when passing through.
